Saints open with big win over Bristol

Resurgent Northampton handed lowly Bristol a 30-17 hammering in the EDF Energy Cup at Franklins Gardens on Saturday.

Northampton handed debuts to inside centre Nils Mordt and No.8 Rob Milligan for their clash with the Guinness Premiership’s bottom side Bristol.

But Bristol hit the ground running and took a 5-0 lead after just five minutes following a five pointer from left wing Mathew Turner.

Newly promoted Premiership side Northampton struck back five minutes later through fullback Paul Diggin, to level matters at 5-5.

Turner claimed his try brace after 21 minutes before Saints scrum-half Lee Dickson crossed the whitewash, with the match locked at 10-10.

The Saints started the second period with greater attacking intent and extended their lead to 27-10, with tries from right wing Chris Ashton and outside centre Chris Mayor.

But Tongan Vunga Lilo gave Bristol some late hope with a try to bring them back within 10 points at 17-27 after Chris Ashwin’s conversion.

But the Saints had done enough for an impressive 30-17 win to increase the gloom in Bristol.
