Rampant Blue Bulls crush Kavaliers Currie Cup clash

It took the Blue Bulls 14 minutes to get onto the scoreboard, but just 17 minutes later they had their fourth try and a bonus point in what became a 69-19 Currie Cup rout of the Boland Kavaliers at Loftus on Friday night.

In all, the impressive Blue Bulls ran in 11 tries and regained the top spot on the Currie Cup log, forcing the Sharks to win outright against the Free State Cheetahs on Saturday to take over again as leaders after 11 rounds.

The Blue Bulls, smarting from last week’s defeat against the Sharks, literally ran everything from the word go.

They were helped in their cause by five lineout turnovers by the Kavaliers in the first half, and the fact that the visitors had to make more than double the numbers of tackles before the break tells the story.

The Bulls’ forwards were in control from the word go, and Man of the Match Gurthro Steenkamp and Juandre Kruger were probably the pick of the big men with Dewald Potgieter outstanding among the loose forwards.

Too many penalties and free kicks initially were probably a small blot on the Blue Bulls’ copybook, but such was their dominance that coach Frans Ludeke will probably not even address this issue on Monday.

They broke the 50-point barrier after just 48 minutes, and it became worse when Burton Francis, with his first touch of the ball, jinked his way over to convert. He came on when Ludeke replaced both his halfbacks in the 50th minute.

However, a high tackle penalised with a yellow card saw the youngster’s time on the field curtailed to just 20 minutes.

There was a period of about 15 minutes towards the end of the match where the Bulls lost their concentration against a side intent on negative and, at times, cynical play but the general control and structure of the home side would have pleased Ludeke.

However, a second yellow card – to Pedrie Wannenburg – and three tries in an unanswered 19 points by the Kavaliers in the last 10 minutes will be something the coach has to address after 60 initial minutes of great rugby.
