The first Bledisloe Cup clash test was momentarily stopped following uncertainty over the legality of an All Black replacement at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

All Black scrumhalf Andy Ellis was substituted shortly after scoring a try early in the second half, with his eventual replacement Jimmy Cowan warming up for several minutes before heading onto the field.

Ellis however came back on following a knee injury to replacement Jimmy Cowan.

When Cowan left the field there was no blood in sight and yet the physio called for a blood replacement while Cowan was clearly holding his knee and was in discomfort.

Ellis was allowed to stay on the field due to Cowan being in the blood bin. Still no blood there unless there was internal bleeding.

Officials stopped the match after Ellis had been back on and there was much confusion between the sideline officials over the replacement/bloodbin.

The fact that Cowan had come on for a replacement and was then replaced due to an injury and then Ellis being allowed to come back on clearly annoyed the Australians.

Only front row forwards are permitted to go off and come back on.

When Cowan came back on later on in the match his knee was heavily bandaged showing that he had been substituted for a knee injury.
