Former Springbok captain John Smit could make a shock return to South African Rugby by playing for the Stormers in Super Rugby this season.

The Stormers have a crisis at hooker and Wednesday's Cape Times have linked Smit to the Super Rugby franchise as a possible short-term solution.

2011 and 2012 South African Conference winners the Stormers have a short

The Stormers are expected to move Deon Fourie from loose forward back to hooker for their opening Super Rugby clash against the Bulls but who his back up will be is not yet known.

Fourie played most of last year's Currie Cup campaign at loose forward but has plenty of experience at hooker.

The Stormers regular starting hooker Tiaan Liebenberg injured his back last October and then 21-year-old star Scarra Ntubeni was forced to have shoulder surgery earlier this week and is expected to be out of rugby for three months.

Smit currently plays his rugby in England for Saracens and alternates his starts in the team with former Stormers hooker Schalk Brits.

The 111 former Springbok captain has been linked with a move to French big money spenders Toulon next season but if he can get an early release from Saracens or a loan deal he could be playing in Cape Town soon.

This would not be the first time that Saracens have helped the Stormers in Super Rugby as in 2010 they allowed Schalk Brits to fill in while the Cape side had an injury crisis.
