Exeter Chiefs upset Newcastle Falcons 32-15 in the Aviva Premiership at Sandy Park on Saturday for their second victory of the season.
The Chiefs made it two wins out of two to go top of the Premiership table, for 24 hours at least, after scoring four tries against a Falcons side who battled hard all afternoon.
Playing with the benefit of a stiff wind in the first half, Exeter wasted no time in getting the scoring underway, wing Josh Tatupu crossing the Newcastle line inside the first minute after receiving a pass from Igancio Mieres.
Mieres added the conversion and then a penalty to open up a 10-0 lead before Newcastle hit back through Tom Catterick's 23rd-minute try. Jimmy Gopperth missed the conversion.
Centre Phil Dollman's sharp break led to Exeter's next points, referee Dean Richards ruling that a Chiefs support runner had been held back illegally. Mieres made no mistake with the resulting penalty.
Gopperth was then successful with a 40th-minute penalty to keep the Falcons to within one score of the host side at the break.
Rob Baxter's men started the second half brightly but were unable to breach the Falcons defence until Sireli Naqelevuki broke through for his second try in as many games.
The ever-lively Matt Jess supplied Dollman with the next score before Newcastle answered with a try of their own from James Fitzpatrick. Jason Shoemark added the Chiefs' fourth try at the death, much to the delight of the crowd of 5,405.
