News is not too Sonny for Toulon’s Williams

Toulon’s New Zealand backrow forward Sonny Bill Williams will be out for three weeks after picking up an injury at the weekend, the club said on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old, who controversially joined the French Top 14 team from Australian Rugby League’s Canterbury Bulldogs last month, was hurt during Saturday’s draw with Brive.

Williams sparked a media storm earlier in the summer when he left Australia mid-season to switch codes and play in Europe, despite being only one year into a five-year contract with the Canterbury Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs dropped their legal battle to prevent the loss of their player, accepting a reported 750,000 Australian dollar (653,400 US) cash settlement.

Toulon’s South African hooker Christiaan Liebenberg had to have a hand operation after being injured in the same match, and faces a lay-off of up to two months.
