Mealamu: Blues were close but not close enough

Veteran Blues hooker Keven Mealamu says that their 30-23 fifth round Super Rugby loss to the Hurricanes is hard to take.

The Blues have now lost their five opening matches this season which added to the two losses at the end of last season mean they have lost their last seven matches.

The Blues delivered a much improved performance against the Hurricanes in Palmerston North and after leading in the first half they eventually lost 30-23.

The Blues pushed the Hurricanes for the whole match and remained in the contest until Julian Savea scored his second try five minutes from time.

Mealamu, who is Super Rugby’s most capped player, said that after their step up in performace the loss was difficult to take.

“The effort’s definitely there, we’re working hard, we’ve just got to get over that slump at the moment,” said Mealamu.

“It’s not about luck, it’s about working hard to get ourselves a win. “

“We’re all behind each other. We were close but not close enough.”
