Lions v Stormers Super Rugby Preview

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Lions and the Stormers the Cape Town based Stormers have won five and the Lions one.

Three of the last Super Rugby matches between the teams were played in Johannesburg so home advantage was not a factor.

Overall the Lions have played the Stormers 19 times since 1998 and the Lions have won just 5 matches and lost 14. There have no draws.

In terms of selection the Lions have made vast changes to the side and notably dropped Marnitz Boshoff and given a start to Elton Jantjies.

In the forwards, Schalk van der Merwe, Robbie Coetzee and Julian Redelinghuys all start while Jaco Kriel returns from his minor groin injury at flank.

Meanwhile, in the backline, Faf de Klerk has been named at scrumhalf partnering Jantjies. Sampie Mastriet will play his first Super Rugby game for the Lions as he runs out at left wing.

Harold Vorster will also celebrate his first Super Rugby start at centre while Jaco van der Walt will provide cover at flyhalf on the bench.

The Stormers have made minimal changes and Bongi Mbonambi and Nizaam Carr come into the starting line up. Mbonami comes in for Ntubeni and Carr comes in for the injured Rynhardt Elstadt in the No.6 jersey.

The Lions have yet to win a match this year having lost to the Hurricanes and the Sharks. In contrast the Stormers lead the Super Rugby standings and are one of three teams who have played two matches and are still unbeaten.
