Hurricanes confirm Palmerston North Super Rugby match

The Hurricanes will play the Western Force at Palmerston North

2015 Super Rugby finalists the Hurricanes have confirmed that they will play their first home match of the 2016 season in Palmerston North.

The match will take place on the third weekend of March, 2016 and will be against the Western Force at Manawatu’s Central Energy Trust Arena on Friday, March 18.

The match is set to coincide with the Field Days and a major national agricultural investment conference taking place in the city.

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee said it had been a pleasure to work with the Manawatu Rugby Union and Palmerston North City Council to make the match happen.

“We’re pleased we’re able to take something to the region which will hopefully add to the atmosphere they’ve already got going on with the Field Days.

“We’ve got a strong Manawatu presence in our squad this year as well, so it will be a great opportunity for some of those guys to get a run in front of their home crowd.”

Hurricanes newcomer Ngani Laumape will be one Turbo hoping to suit up after returning to rugby union, while Callum Gibbins, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Chris Eves and Otere Black will no doubt be in the mix as well.

Manawatu Rugby Union chief executive John Knowles said the relationship between the union and the Hurricanes had never been stronger following the announcement of another Super Rugby game in Palmerston North.

“To offer us a game that will tie in with a national agriculture conference, and the Field Days, is an exciting prospect and will make for a real festive atmosphere around the region.

“It is also a fantastic opportunity for Turbos fans to see their hometown heroes represent their province in Hurricanes colours. We’re really looking forward to it.”
