Griffons suffer Currie Cup semi final blow

The Griffons will be minus big Hennie Daniller in their First Division semi-final against the SWD Eagles in Welkom on Saturday. The big fullback will be on duty for the Cheetahs when they meet the Boland in Bloemfontein.

Daniller played at inside centre for the Purple People Eaters and added much stability with his rock-solid defence and ability to carry the ball across the advantage line.

Two further changes were made to the pack that upset the Eagles in George. Big Ockie van Zyl returns to the engine room and will partner Windpomp van Rooyen in the second row.

Van Zyl’s inclusion gives coach Harry Pienaar the advantage of freeing up flanker Francois Uys and the former Lions players will play in the number seven jersey.

Uys joins the formidable Ashley Johnson and fetcher Albert Parsons, who are also contracted by the Cheetahs Rugby Union.

The tight five are all local players who will have to carry the can against the visiting Eagles.

Coach Pienaar have included five forwards on the bench, including big Cheetahs lock Isak van der Westhuizen and two loose-forwards, Jonothan Mokuena and Shaun Botha.

Griffons Team:vs. Eagles: Cecil Afrika: Darryl Coeries, Jacko Jackson, Werner Griesel, Howard Noble; Kennedy Tsimba, Danny Theron; Ashley Johnson, Francois Uys, Albert Parsons, Windpomp van Rooyen, Ockie van Zyl, Gert Greyling, Andries Kruger, Sarel Louw.
