Former England coach Farrell to join Ireland

Andy Farrell will become Ireland's defence coach

Former England defence and assistant coach Andy Farrell will join Ireland and head coach Joe Schmidt’s coaching staff after the Six Nations Championship.

Farrell lost his position as an England assistant coach after Stuart Lancaster left his England position after the Rugby World Cup.

The former England defence coach was defence coach on the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia.

“To have this opportunity to work with a very talented management and playing group really excites me,” said the 40-year-old Farrell.

“With a wealth of top-class experienced senior players and a fantastic crop of youngsters pushing hard, the future is very positive for Irish rugby, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Farrell will link up with Ireland after the Six Nations but ahead of their tour of South Africa and has signed with the Ireland Rugby Football Union until after the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The former Rugby League star’s appointment comes after Australian Les Kiss left the Union to join Ulster.

“The quality of his delivery and breadth of his experience, as well as the positive impact he had when coaching a number of our senior players during the 2013 Lions tour, will add real value for us,” said Schmidt.

Farrell was an England assistant coach for four years but arguably the highlight was being part of the victorious Lions tour in 2013.

As a Rugby Union player Farrell won eight caps for England and played three matches for England at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
