European Rugby Champions Cup organizers have confirmed that they are currently formulating a strategy on how best to organise and market a match in the future between the winners of the European Rugby Champions Cup and the winners of the Super Rugby competition.
The European Rugby Champions Cup organizers (EPCR) have released a statement saying that they are contining to develop the concept and that they are holding talks with Super Rugby’s organizers SANZAAR.
“As EPCR continues to develop the concept, it has to not least ensure that any such match would be incorporated into the global season at the appropriate time and that it would also involve full-strength squads from both competing clubs to reflect the elite nature of the Champions Cup and Super Rugby tournaments,” said EPCR in a statement.
“To that end, EPCR is in discussions with SANZAAR, which runs the Super Rugby competition, with a view to working on a joint proposal regarding the match.”
The statement comes after there were reports in the media about an possible annual match and EPCR says that, “With planning at an early stage, EPCR will be making no further comment until it is in a position to do so at a future date. ”
A match between last year’s Super Rugby winners the Highlanders and European Champions Toulon was planned but the match ended up as a pre-season warm up for the Highlanders against Racing Metro in Hong Kong this year.
