England confirm Catt and Cipriani bust up

Make Catt and Danny Cipriani at training

England Rugby Officials have confirmed that a training ground bust-up between England assistant coach Mike Catt and Danny Cipriani did take place but that it was resolved swiftly.

The incident happened on the day before England announced their Rugby World Cup squad in August but hours after Cipriani was told that he had not made the final 31-man squad.

Cipriani was apparently told to resume training but when the effort he put in was thought to be below the level recquired he got a “dressing down ” from Catt.

An argument is understood to have followed and Cipriani got support from his fellow players who felt that Catt got too personal.

England management have insisted that rumours of the incident almost causing a “mutiny ” are untrue and they have denied that head coach Stuart Lancaster instructed his players not to leak details of the row.

“Danny and Mike were involved in a robust conversation on the training pitch following a misunderstanding around a training drill instruction, ” said a Rugby Football Union spokesman.

“Both shook hands afterwards and the incident played no bearing on selection. ”

England cannot qualify for the quarter finals and have one remaining match against Uruguay at Manchester City Stadium on Saturday.
