England centre Burgess to remain with Bath

Sam Burgess has won 5 caps for England

England’s Rugby World Cup centre Sam Burgess has been given time off this weekend by his club Bath but according to head coach Mike Ford he is staying in Bath.

Burgess joined West Country Premiership Rugby club Bath last year and still has two years left to run on his contract but there are rumours that he is considering returning to Australia and resuming his career in Rugby League.

The former NRL star has been played at centre by England but his club Bath have said that they will play him at flank.

Burgess has won 5 caps for England and has also played one match for the England Saxons.

Reports in Australia suggested that 26-year-old was set to return to rugby league with his former NRL club the South Sydney Rabbitohs, less than a year after switching codes.

However his Premiership club coach Mike Ford has insisted that Burgess is staying in England and that the reports of his return to Australia are “just the latest story about him”.

“This is the time that he becomes a better rugby union player,” Ford told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Ford said that Burgess will honour his Bath contract which ends in June 2017 and added that he wants to play for England in the Six Nations next year.

Ford added that Burgess would feature again for Bath at the Recreation Ground on 2 November.

“I’ve spoken to Sam many times and we’ve spoken about coming back to Bath, rolling his sleeves up and playing six for us,” said Ford.

“Everything we have spoken about has been about his future and playing well for Bath and potentially getting him to play for England in the Six Nations, if not at the end of the season on tour to Australia. “
