Coach : Burgess did enough to make World Cup

Sam Burgess says people did not want him to succeed in Rugby Union

England centre Sam Burgess has done enough to be named in England’s Rugby World
Cup squad according to his Bath coach Mike Ford.

Ford was an England assistant coach in the last Rugby World Cup and has praised
the performance put in by Burgess saying it was “world class”.

Saturday’s Test match against France at Twickenham was Burgess’ Test debut
and impressed in his partnership with Henry Slade.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster is expected to name four centres for the
Rugby World Cup and Ford has backed Burgess to be one of the four even though
he plays at flank for Bath.

Ford says that Burgess did everything he thought he would do “and much
more” in the 19-14 win at Twickenham.

The low point in Burgess’ debut was that he was yellow carded for an infringement
on France’s Morgan Parra.

“He made a number of tackles, some of them very hard-hitting,”
Ford told the BBC.

“I also thought he was OK with the football, he did a couple of nice
passes. He did everything right, he even got a try-saver at an important time.

“I think he did enough to make the squad. Lancaster is looking for leadership
off the field and a presence in midfield.”

England start their Rugby World Cup campaign against Fiji on 18 September and
Ford said that Burgess could make the squad with his fellow debutant centre
Henry Slade.

“I thought Henry Slade played well and I don’t see any reason why they
can’t take them both,” he said.

However, former England scrum half Matt Dawson says that Burgess did not do
enough to be selected for the Rugby World Cup.

“You can’t take him to the World Cup.

“Positionally he wasn’t great. He played like a six rather than a 12.”
