Bath move up to fourth

Bath moved up to fourth place on the Guinness Premiership table with tight 20-16 victory over London Irish on Saturday.

The visitors took a 5-0 lead at the Madejski Stadium from Springbok fly-half Butch James after nine minutes.

The 29 year-old World Cup winner and left wing Jack Cuthbert added three unanswered penalties to take Bath’s lead up to 14-0 with 12 minutes remaining in the first-half.

Prop forward Alex Corbisiero powered over for Irish’s opening try five minutes later before Cuthbert brought an end to the half with another penalty for a 17-5 advantage.

London Irish dominated the scoring for much of the second-half and added to penalties from Aussie fullback Peter Hewat and Eoghan Hickey to narrow their deficit to 11-17.

The hosts grabbed a late Elvis Seveali’i try to set-up a nail biting end to the game with Bath edging a tender 17-16 lead.

But Cuthbert landed a vital 80th minute penalty to secure a narrow 20-16 win for Bath.
