Bulls fight back against Falcons

A young but talented Bulls team fought back twice to defeat the Falcons 19-15 in a hard fought Super 14 pre-season friendly played at Loftus Versfeld on Thursday evening.

Further compounding the first match of the year for both teams was the wet surface after the fixture had been moved from Brakpan to Loftus with reports that the Brakpan Stadium was flooded due to persistent rain.

The Falcons were never going to be a pushover as they, too, are in preparation for the Vodacom Cup and they pushed the Bulls team comprising mainly of last year’s Blue Bulls under-21 and under-19 players to the end.

It was the Bulls who took the lead as early as the 10th minute when Bulls flyhalf Burton Francis swerved his way through the Falcons defence to score under the poles.

After bruising exchanges in the middle of the park and a 15 minute spell with the players getting accustomed to the new laws, the Falcons scored a well constructed try through centre Ernie Kruger.

On the stroke of half-time the Bulls saw themselves one man less as winger Rocco Jansen was yellow carded for pulling a Falcons player when they were in attack.

Both sides were locked 7-7 at the half-time interval.

It was the Falcons that took the initiative in the second half and their hard work paid off handsomely as reserve fullback Paul Bester slotted over a penalty in the 47th minute.

Again, the bruising battles between the two packs continued until the Bulls re-instated their first half substitutes.

The Bulls fought back against their older counterparts and in the 62nd minute Jansen scored in the corner to give the Bulls a 12-10 lead.

Three minutes later the Falcons stole the lead with a runaway try constructed in their half with wing Dean Okkers scoring.

The Bulls once again were forced to dig deep and were rewarded when newly acquired lock Juandre Kruger crashed over to seal the scrappy but promising Bulls victory in the 70th minute.
