Bortolami avoids surgery

Gloucester captain Marco Bortolami will not require surgery to the fractured left eye socket sustained during Sunday’s 29-21 win over Ulster in the Heineken Cup.

Following further consultation with a specialist in Milan on Tuesday evening, the injury is now not as serious as first feared and the 27- year-old could return to action in four weeks.

Bortolami, who will miss Gloucester’s Guinness Premiership match against Wasps on Saturday, will rest for 10 days before resuming training.

Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan said: “This news is better than we were expecting considering the extent of the injury and hopefully we’ll see Marco back in action in the next month.”
