Setbacks for Boland Kavaliers

The Boland Kavaliers will have to dig deep into their reserve strength for next Saturday’s warm-up match against the Stormers at Wellington.

Last season’s captain and hooker Conrad Burke was mysteriously bitten on his shoulder, possibly by a spider, and is experiencing a lot of discomfort, team manager Denver Pienaar said.

“The docters are still trying to find out what the problem really is. He will definitely not play against the Stormers and could also miss the warm-up match against the Bulls at Wellington a week later.” Fiery lock Dries van Schalkwyk will also miss the Stormers – and possibly also the Bulls match.

“Dries still suffers from a groin injury he sustained while playing Sevens rugby,” Pienaar said.

To add to the Kavaliers’ woes, exciting young scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage is attending the national Under-20 training camp in Saldanha, while strongman Janro van Niekerk is in the Stormers squad trying to make the loosehead positios his own.

It is also not certain whether experienced winger John Daniels will recover in time from his hamstring injury.

Pienaar said facing the Stormers without several regulars is a massive task, but it also gives other players the opportunity to stake their claim.

*Boland recently obtained the services of Maties pivot Elgar Watts after he was voted Player of the Tournament at last year’s SA Club Championships.

Watts, however, will also miss the Stormers match due to a slight hamstring injury.

The match starts at 5pm.
