Uruguayan defender signs with Valenciennes

Uruguay international Williams Guillermo Martinez on Saturday signed a two-year contract with French first division outfit Valenciennes.

The 25-year-old central defender, who joins from Uruguayan side Club Defensor Sporting where he has spent most of his career, was Valenciennes’ first purchase during the winter transfer window.

“He will join his new team-mates at the beginning of the week,” the French club announced.

Williams Martinez, nicknamed ‘Willy’, has also played for Argentine club Ferro Carril Oeste during the 2003-2004 season and had a six-month stint at English side West Bromwich Albion in 2006.

Valenciennes are currently seventh in the French first division, ten points off leaders Lyon.
