Hewat checks in at Madejski

Australian Peter Hewat is the latest of London Irish’s signings to arrive at the Reading club. He arrived on Tuesday and has already started training with the squad.

The full-back joins London Irish having led his ARC team, the Central Coast Rays, to victory in last Saturday’s inaugural ARC final against Melbourne Rebels in Gosford, Sydney. Hewat scored 15 of his team’s 20 points.

In little more than three years of senior representative rugby, Hewat scored 636 points in 50 games for the Waratahs, placing him second on their all-time scoring list behind Matthew Burke.

Hewat, 29, added leading point-scorer in the ARC to his bulging portfolio of statistical landmarks, the only player to crack the century mark.

He set franchise records in try and point-scoring in Super 12/14 rugby, but a couple of goals eluded him, including playing for the Wallabies.

“I would have loved to have won a Super 12 or 14 with NSW, that’s probably one regret,” Hewat said.

“I would have obviously loved to have played for Australia, but that’s not a regret, that’s just obviously something that didn’t happen.

“But it’s been an absolute dream come true. If you had told me three or four years ago I would play 50 games for NSW I would have laughed at you.

“Now I’m looking forward to my new adventure with London Irish, it’s going to be exciting,” he concluded.
