Saintly teenager to face Samoan stars

Northampton Saints’s teenage sensation, 17-year-old Grant Anderson, will get his first taste of senior international rugby if he is given game time when the Saints take on Samoa at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday.

The game is a pre-season outing for the Saints and a World Cup warm-up match for the Samoans.

Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder has named a 27-man squad for Sunday’s encounter with the Samoan World Cup side – his first game in charge of the team.

The squad features several members of the Saints senior academy, including Anderson, and the majority of the summer signings.

The exceptions are Chris Ashton, Euan Murray and Springbok Joe Van Niekerk – all of whom have yet to arrive at the club.

“This is my first chance to see the players in action in a game situation,” said Mallinder.

“I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the youngsters as I’m expecting them to play a full part throughout the season.

“In Samoa they will be up against top-class opposition and it is a fantastic opportunity for them to cut their teeth.

“Samoa are a physical side whose players have plenty of experience and Sunday’s game will be a good yardstick for us.”

The Saints squad includes former Gloucester prop Terry Sigley who is on a two-week trial at the club.

The Samoan side includes a number of season English Premiership and Super 14 stars – including the Tuilagi brothers Anitelea (on the swing) and Henry (at number eight).

Super 14 stars like Loki Crichton, Steve So’oialo, Donald Kerslake, Mohonri Schwalger, Leo Lefaialii and Filipo Levi gives the team a real hard edge.
