Henson may defect to Scarlets

The Wales on Sunday newspaper reports that Gavin Henson may be on his way to the Scarlets for the coming season.

Henson has been axed from Gareth Jenkins’ Rugby World Cup squad after receiving the lowest fitness marks of all the 41 players initially convened.

With James Hook emerging as a major force in Swansea, and Henson the only one of a host of internationals not to have recently negotiated a new contract, it seems as though the time is ripe for a change.

Henson has a season left on his contract with the Ospreys, but made only 12 appearances for the region last year, with persistent injuries and a loss of form holding him back.

Sale Sharks also expressed an interest in Henson, but after the signing of Luke McAlister, and with Henson’s wife Charlotte Church expecting their first child in a month’s time, a move out of Wales is unlikely.

The report said that the Scarlets and Ospreys had been in deep talks about the possibility of a move this week, although the matter was not resolved.

Yet the Ospreys are now understood to see Henson as a high-maintenance player they believe they can live without.
