Erasmus’ departure from Bloem confirmed

Speculation that Springbok technical advisor Rassie Erasmus will become the new Stormers coach and Director of Rugby at the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) has heightened with the announcement that he has been released by the Cheetahs.

The Board of the Free State Cheetahs issued a statement in which it said that it had accepted a request from Erasmus to end his contract as coach for both the Currie Cup and Super 14 teams.

The statement, on the Cheetahs’ website, said it was “with regret” that the board had to announce that they have agreed to release Erasmus from his contract.

“We are disappointed to lose the services of a person who had offered exceptional service and had achieved so much [two Currie Cup triumphs – outright in 2005 and shared with the Blue Bulls in 2006] with the Cheetahs,” the statement said.

“We did all in our power to keep him, but were unsuccessful.”

Erasmus has been linked to taking over as Stormers coach from Cobus van der Merwe, a coaching job which will now be linked to the DSirector of Rugby position at the WPRU – a post currently occupied by Nick Mallett.

When the WPRU announced last week that it was going to link the Super 14 coaching job to the Director of Rugby post, Mallett announced that he would not be reapplying for the position when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Former Springbok World Cup hero and current Pumas coach Chester Williams, as well as Emerging Springboks coach Peter de Villiers have also been linked to the new Stormers coaching/Director of Rugby job.

However, insiders say Erasmus is a shoo-in for the position and his resignation from the Cheetahs seem to confirm this.
