Afeaki heading to France

Llanelli Scarlets have confirmed utility forward Inoke Afeaki’s departure from Stradey Park.

The second row, who can also play in the back row, has delayed a chance of studying at Oxford to play in France with Grenoble.

“Inoke’s contract was up and we decided not to renew his terms,” said Scarlets Chief Executive Stuart Gallacher.

“He was a popular figure with the fans and we wish him well in the rest of his career.”

Afeaki made 27 appearances last season for the Scarlets, scoring two tries. In total, since making his debut in 2005, the former Tongan captain made 55 appearances for the region.

“I was really impressed with the facilities when the club showed me around,” said Afeaki.

“I’ll put my studies on hold for a while as this gives me a great chance to experience another culture and way of life. I enjoyed my time at Llanelli and I can only hope I enjoy my stay in Grenoble as much.”

Afeaki is the second Scarlet within a week to announce he is playing in France next season. Last week full-back Barry Davies signed for Brive.
