Brumbies make late change as Toomua starts

The Brumbies have made a late change to their side to play in their Super Rugby Qualifier against the Stormers in Cape Town as Matt Toomua will start.

Toomua has passed a late fitness test so he comes into the starting line up at inside centre after playing 28 minutes off the bench in last week’s 37-24 loss to the Crusaders.

The 24-year-old’s return is a boost for the Brumbies heading into the sudden death Qualifier against the Stormers.

After initially being named as a reserve, Toomua made it through this week’s training sessions without incident and proved his injured ankle has recovered in time for the match.

“Matty’s got through the week really well,” Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham said.

“He trained really well on Wednesday, did both sessions and pulled up well yesterday.

“We got him out here for the Captain’s Run today and he’s looking really good, so we’re going to start him.”

Toomua’s return to the starting 15 means Robbie Coleman moves to the bench.

In another change, utility back Nigel Ah Wong will replace James Dargaville as a reserve in the 23-man playing squad.

“Robbie goes back to the bench, Nigel comes into the bench meaning James Dargaville will sit out of the 23 this week and Nigel will get his chance,” Larkham said.

The Brumbies lost their previous match against the Stormers at Newlands six weeks ago by just a single point, 25-24.

The game tomorrow will be Brumbies flyhalf Christian Lealiifano’s 100th for the club.

The Stormers are unbeaten in their past five home matches however the Brumbies have won two-out-of-two Super Rugby Qualifiers.
