Sonny Bill set to return for Chiefs against Hurricanes

Hamilton based Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs look set to get Sonny Bill Williams back for their final round Super rugby match against the Hurricanes in New Plymouth on Saturday.

All Black Williams has missed the Chiefs last four Super Rugby matches with a back injury but head coach Dave Rennie says that he has now recovered from injury.

“He’s had a bit of a lumbar thing obviously causing a bit of pain through the gluts and hammies as backs do,” Rennie told OneNews.

“We’ve been really cautious around him to be honest he probably could of played last week but we didn’t want to push him.

“The plan was always this week, so he’s fired up, he was pretty keen to play last week.”

While Williams is set to return to the Chiefs line up fans will not get to see him go up against his All Black rival Ma’a Nonu as the Hurricanes midfielder will be rested this week.

Nonu was a late addition to the team last week when Cory Jane withdrew and Nonu came off the bench to score two tries.

The Chiefs are expected to rest All Black flanker Sam Cane with Michael Leitch moving to the number 7 position.

In the front row Ben Tamiefuna is set to return while winger James Lowe is also in line to return after a shoulder injury kept him out for the past couple of matches.

The Chiefs are currently in fourth place but need to keep winning to stay ahead of the Highlanders who are level on 48 points. The team that finishes higher in the standings will be rewarded with home advantage for next week’s playoffs.
