Highlanders beat Chiefs at Invercargill

Out of the last six Super Rugby matches between the Dunedin based Highlanders and the Hamilton based Chiefs the Highlanders have won two and the Chiefs four.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Highlanders kick off and we are underway. 

2.00: The Chiefs win an early penalty for the Highlanders not rolling away. The crowd are already very vocal. Damien McKenzie will kick for posts. 

3.00: McKenzie misses the shot. 

5.00: The Highlanders win a penalty. Sopoaga kicks for touch but misses. 

7.00: First scrum of the match ends in a penalty for the Highlanders as the Chiefs pounce on Smith before the ball is out. Sopoaga lines up the posts. 

8.00: Lima Sopoaga takes the shot and nails it. The Highlanders lead. 

11.00: Penalty to the Highlanders. Sopoaga takes the shot and nails this one too. 

13.00: The Chiefs win a penalty so they kick to the half way line. The Chiefs win the line out but they lose the ball forward in contact. 

17.00: The Chiefs win another penalty. Damian McKenzie takes the kick and this one he nails. The Chiefs are on the board. 

20.00: The Highlanders work the ball to the Chiefs try-line. Waisake Naholo goes for the line but loses the ball in the tackle by Damian Mckenzie. 

22.00:After some pressure in their 22 by the Highlanders the Chiefs kick for touch to clear. 

23.00: The line out is not straight so the Chiefs have a scrum. 

24.00: The Chiefs win the scrum and Augustine Pulu slices through the Highlanders. He is eventually caught and the Highlanders kick upfield. A kicking contest follows until the Chiefs run the ball and then  concede a penalty. Sopoaga will kick for posts. 

26.00: Sopoaga misses the kick and the Chiefs run the ball out of their 22. The passing is scrappy and the Highlanders knock on. 

27.00: The Highlanders win a penalty for the front row angling in. 

29.00: The Highlanders move the ball from side to side in the Chiefs 22. Eventually the stretch the Chiefs and Patrick Osborne slips through to the score the opening TRY! 

30.00: Sopoaga misses the conversion. 

34.00: Chiefs possession is at 58%. There is an injury break for Charlie Ngatai,

37.00: The Chiefs win another penalty for the Highlanders from row angling in at the scrum. They kick for touch in the Highlanders 22. Aaron Smith gets a telling off for walking away with the ball after the penalty was awarded as it prevented the Chiefs from taking a tap. 

38.00 Another penalty for the Chiefs. They kick for touch again. They win the line out. 

39.00: The Chiefs chip the ball through and behind the Highlanders and McKenzie chases and then dives on the ball and scores. The TMO will check. McKenzie knocked on as he didn’t press down on the ball with his hands and then lost the ball forward. No Try. The Highlanders win the scrum and kick for touch. 

40.00:There is time for a line out. The Chiefs go long and the Highlanders come away with the ball and kick the ball out. 

Its half time.

Marty McKenzie kicks off and we are underway with the second half. Tim Nanai-Williams comes on for Charlie Ngatai. 

42.00: The Highlanders win a line out and at first receiver Waisake Naholo slips straight through the Chiefs backs and races for the line and scores. TRY! 

44.00: Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. 

48.00: The Chiefs look to hit back. They keep the ball in hand and Hika Elliot crashes his way down the wing. The Chiefs move the ball back to the centrefield and continue the attack and they win a penalty for offside. The Chiefs will kick for posts. McKenzie nails it.

52.00: Malakai Fekitoa is limping a little. Could be a hamstring. 

55.00:Jason Emery comes on for Fekitoa. The TMO is called in for an incident possibly involving Hika Elliot. Nothing comes off it and the Highlanders have a scrum. 

56.00: The Chiefs win a penalty in front of the posts but outside of the Highlanders 22. 

57.00: McKenzie takes the kick and he nails it. 

58.00: The game is starting to open up a little. The Highlanders press the Chiefs back into their 22. The Chiefs make the mark and then kick for touch. 

60.00; Penalty to the Highlanders. Sopoaga takes the kick for posts. He nails it. Hika Elliot comes off and so does Ben Tameifuna. Brian Alainu’uese and Siate Tokolahi come on. 

62.00: The Chiefs try to clear the ball with a kick but it gets charged down. Hosea Gear chases and dots the ball down to save the try.  

63.00: The Highlanders win another penalty. Sopoaga takes the shot and extends the lead. 

70.00:The Chiefs knock on in their 22 handing the Highlanders a scrum in their 22. 

71.00: The Highlanders keep the ball moving through the hands in the Chiefs 22 and Richard Buckman goes for the corner and scores. TRY! 

73.00: Sopoaga slots the conversion. 

76.00: The Highlanders are dominating the match. They are searching for the bonus point try. 

77.00: The Highlanders have the ball on the Chiefs 5m line. They cant through initially but they go wide and Ben Smith dives through the tackle and scores the bonus point TRY! 

79.00: Sopoaga misses the conversion. 

The ball goes out after the kick off. The Highlanders have won.
