Alexander to play Super Rugby for Brumbies in 2016

The Australian Rugby Union and the Brumbies have re-signed prop Ben Alexander until the end of the 2016 rugby season keeping him in Canberra for another year.

A veteran of 112 caps for the Brumbies and 72 for the Wallabies, Alexander is Australia’s most experienced prop. At season’s end he will have contributed to two Rugby World Cups, seven Spring Tours, a British and Irish Lions Tour, (at least) two Super Rugby Finals series and a Super Rugby Final in 2013.

Alexander’s switch from loose-head to tight-head has given him an edge of diversity over other props during the last decade. He is a strong carrier and works hard at set-piece to keep the Brumbies rolling forward.

As well as his on-field work, Alexander has also been credited for working with a host of young front-rowers. Scott Sio, Allan Alaalatoa and the Smith twins have all become better players thanks to Alexander’s tutorage.

Alexander said with his new contract out of the way he could now concentrate on putting the Brumbies in a position where they could challenge for the Super Rugby Finals.

“This is the fourth time I’ve re-signed with the Brumbies and it’s exciting for me and my family to have things sorted for another 12 months,” Alexander said.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to make a life and a career here in Canberra with the Brumbies. Since moving here more than a decade ago it’s become my home so I’m pleased to have things sorted and to be staying for another year.”

Arriving in Canberra as a hefty lad with a soft-spot for ham and pineapple pizza back in 2003, Alexander immediately impressed in the ACT Colts competition with Uni-Norths and soon found himself in the Brumbies Academy.

A badly broken leg in 2006 and a knee reconstruction in 2010 have been the only injury blights on his career, which flourished through early spells in the ARC with the Rams, with the Bedford Blues in the UK and the Australian U21s in 2005 playing with Ben Mowen and Adam Ashley-Cooper.

Given the Rugby World Cup this year and his extension with the Wallabies through to the end of 2016, Alexander is in line to become the first Australian prop to crack 100 international caps.
