Lions beat Cheetahs in Bloemfontein

Out of the last six Super Rugby matches between the Bloemfontein based Cheetahs and the Johannesburg based Lions the Johannesburg side have won four and the Cheetahs two.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Lions kick off and we are underway. 

The ball is taken into touch almost straight away. 

2.00: The Lions show that they want to run the ball almost immediately as they break through the Cheetahs defence from a line out. The Cheetahs scramble and stop the attack. 

6.00: Penalty to the Cheetahs. Francois Brummer takes the kick and nails it. The Cheetahs lead. 

9.00; The Lions win a penalty back. Elton Jantjies takes the kick and nails it. The scores are level.

12.00: Injury break for a player on both sides. 

14.00:The Lions win a penalty for a player playing the ball on the ground. Jantjies will take a shot at the posts. The Cheetahs have already made 45 tackles compared to the Lions 8. 

15.00: Jantjies takes the kick and nails it. 

20.00: The Cheetahs win a line out on the Lions throw. They make ground as they move the ball across the field but then knock on. 

23.00: The Lions get over the gain line. They almost get Warren Whiteley away for the try but Francois Brummer just manages to stop him short of the line and the Lions knock on. 

25.00: The Lions set up a maul from a line out. They drive towards the line and Jaco Kriel goes over in the corner. TRY! 

26.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick from out wide and he nails it. 

31.00:The Cheetahs scrum is coming under pressure from the Lions. The Cheetahs concede a penalty from the scrum so the Lions kick for touch. 

32.00: The Lions win the line out. They work the ball upfield but can only make about 15m before they knock on. 

35.00: Penalty to the Lions from the scrum.  Jantjies takes the kick and nails it to extend the lead. 

39.00: Both teams testing each other with the boot. The Cheetahs (Clayton Blommetjies) jumps for the high ball but knocks on. 

The Lions attack the Cheetahs in their 22 and Faf de Klerk pops a ball up and over a player to Lionel Mapoe who races in for the TRY. The TMO checks the passing and the try is awarded. 

Jantjies adds the conversion. Its half time.

The Cheetahs kick off and we are underway. 

41.00: The Cheetahs win a penalty so they kick for touch. The ball goes over the dead ball line so the Lions have a 22 drop out. 

43.00: The Lions turn the ball over and counter attack. They move the ball out to Courtnall Skosan who shows his pace and races for the corner. TRY! 

44.00 Jantjies takes the conversion kick and he nails it. 

48.00: The TMO is called in for a late and dangerous tackle on Ryno Benjamin by Robbie Coetzee. He is yellow carded. Could easily have been red. 

49.00: The Cheetahs kick to the corner for the line out. The Cheetahs win the line out and try to drive over the line. They get stopped short. The Cheetahs win another penalty for tackler not releasing. 

50.00: The Cheetahs kick to the corner again. They win the line out and drive over and Boom Prinsloo scores. TRY!

51.00: Coenie van Wyk adds the conversion. 

54.00: Penalty to the Lions. Jantjies takes the kick and nails it. 

60.00: The Lions win a penalty. They kick for touch. Armand van der Merwe comes on for Coetzee who has now served his time. 

62.00: The Lions win a penalty on the 5m line for collapsing. They kick for touch. 

63.00:The Lions win the line out. They set up the maul. They go wide and then kick for the corner and  Ruan Combrinck chases and then dives for the ball slides across off the pitch and into the wall – misses the ball. He carries on after a short break. 

64.00: The Lions continue the pressure in the Cheetahs 22. After several goes at the line Faf de Klerk goes for the line and scores. TRY! Bonus point. 

66.00: Jantjies adds the conversion. 

71.00: The Cheetahs work the ball into the Lions 22. They win a line out and set up the maul and drive over the line and Boom Prinsloo scores. TRY! 

72.00: Coenie van Wyk adds the conversion. 

76.00: The Cheetahs problems at scrum time continue. The scrum has to be reset. The Lions win the scrum and they move the ball out to the wings but then there is a knock on. 

79.00: The Cheetahs have the ball on their half but the Lions defence is keeping them in their half, The Cheetahs win a penalty and take the tap and go. They tap and go but knock on. 

The clock ticks over 80 minutes but we have time for a Lions scrum. They win the scrum after was reset. The Loons knock on but that is it. 

That’s it the Lions win.
