Highlanders beat the Western Force in Perth

Out of the last six Super Rugby matches between the Perth based Western Force and the Dunedin based Highlanders the Perth side have won all six.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Highlanders kick off and we are underway. The ball is taken almost straight into touch by the Force so the Highlanders have a line out. 

2.00: The Highlanders win the line out but the Force defend their attacks. 

4.00: The Highlanders go through 5 phases on the attack. Just before they get to the 22m line on the 6th phase they knock on. 

6.00: The ball is chipped ahead by the Force. Marcel Brache chases with Ben Smith but Brache knocks the ball on before he gets to the line in the chase. 5m scrum. 

9.00: The Force win the ball from a line out. They go through the phases and gradually make ground. On the 8th phase – 2m out – they lose the ball. The Highlanders counter attack and then kick upfield. 

13.00: Both teams intent on attacking the other. Both sides defence being tested. 

16.00: The Highlanders are awarded a penalty. Lima Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. The Highlanders are on the board. 

19.00: The Force win a line out after a great territorial kick from Ben Smith. They get the ball out to Dan Haylett-Petty who kicks for touch in Highlanders territory. 

21.00: The Force win a penalty for not rolling away. Its about 45m out. They will take the shot. 

22.00: Sias Ebersohn slots the penalty. 

24.00: The Force set up a line out about 8m out from the Highlanders line. They win the line out. The Force move the ball out to the backs. They change sides but the Highlanders get back and defend. 

25.00: The Force press at the Highlanders line but then lose the ball. The Highlanders counter attack and tMalakai Fekitoa gets the ball to Waisake Naholo but there is a foot in touch. 

29.00: The Highlanders move the ball down the line and Brache almost gets an intercept. He misses and the Highlanders continue the attack. As they go on Nick Cummins gets an intercept and the Highlanders have to scramble in defence. 

32.00: The Force chip the ball ahead and Ben Smith dots the ball down in the try zone. 22 drop out. The ball changes sides a couple of times and then goes into touch. 

37.00: The Highlanders almost get Naholo away in attack but he is caught and loses the ball forward. 

39.00: Penalty to the Force for pushing early at the scrum. The Force kick for touch but fail to find it. 

40.00: The siren sounds but the Highlanders play on. They go from side to side but when the ball goes into touch.The Highlanders are called back for a penalty. They will take the shot.

41.00: Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. The Highlanders lead. 

It’s half time.

The Force kick off and we are underway with the second half. 

43.00: The Highlanders are awarded a penalty. Sopoaga takes the kick but misses. 

45.00: The Highlanders set up a rolling maul after a line out. The backs join in making it an 11 man maul and they drive over the line and John Hardy scores. TRY!  

47.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick from the touchline. He nails it. 

53.00: The Highlanders go through the phases on attack. After 5 phases they lose the ball and the Force counter attack. 

54.00: The Highlanders turn the ball over and they work the ball up fieldbefore the Force get the ball back and kick up field. 

58.00: Haylett-Petty boots the ball downfield and sets up a Highlanders line out. They win the line out and kick upfield. Haylett-Petty boots it back and the ball is dotted down in the try zone. 

62.00: Aaron Smith traps Sias Ebersohn who is trying to clear the ball out of his 22. Ebersohn has to dot the ball down giving the Highlanders an attacking 5m scrum. 

64.00: The Highlanders win the scrum and drive over the line. Elliot Dixon looks to have scored. We go to the TMO. No conclusive evidence. No try. 5m scrum. 

68.00: A short arm penalty to the Highlanders in the Force’s 22. A.Smith takes the tap and the Highlanders go through 7 phases – most of them 5m out. They go wide – too wide and the ball goes into touch. 

71.00: The Highlanders almost unleash Buckman on the wing but he is caught and passes the ball back to the Force. Ebersohn clears. 

72.00: Lima Sopoaga surprises everyone and goes for a drop goal – he nails it.

73.00: The Highlanders continue to attack the Force. They send wave after wave at them and this time Aaron Smith picks up the final pass and he goes in to score. TRY! 

74.00: Marty Banks takes the conversion kick and nails it. 

78.00: The Force looks to finish with something. They get the ball down into the Highlanders 22. 

80.00:Time runs out for the Force as the siren sounds. 

Thats it. The Highlanders win.
