Lions beat Cheetahs in Johannesburg

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Johannesburg based Lions and the Bloemfontein based Cheetahs the Lions have won four and the Cheetahs one.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Lions kick off and we are underway. Jantjies kicks deep and it goes to Joe Pietersen who kicks the ball into touch. 

2.00: The Lions win the first line out and they run at the Cheetahs. Harold Vorster almost gets over the tryline but the Lions keep the ball alive and Warwick Tecklenburg goes over to score. TRY! 

3.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick and nails it. 

6.00: The Lions are doing most of the attacking. They lose the ball forward in the tackle giving the Cheetahs the put in for the scrum. 

8.00: The Lions lose control of the ball at the line out and the Cheetahs come away with it. They run at the Lions but the pass goes to Warren Whiteley who passes down the line and the Lions kick it into touch. 

10.00; The Lions attack the Cheetahs with some real intensity. The Cheetahs somehow hold them out and win a penalty. They kick for touch. 

14.00: The Cheetahs kick high for the wings to chase but as they get there the ball is knocked on. Scrum. 

15.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum. They will kick for posts. 

16.00: Ruan Combrinck takes the shot from 53m out. He just misses. 

18.00: The Cheetahs win a penalty. They kick for touch and the line out. Cheetahs win the line out and work the ball to the Lions 22m line. 

22.00: The Cheetahs go through 20 phases on the attack. They get to 2m out. 22 phases. On the 23rd phase the Lions win a penalty.

23.00: Faf de Klerk takes the tap and the Lions are quickly up and over the half way line. Jantjies almost gets through but the Cheetahs turn the ball over and after a couple of phases Cornal Hendricks gets into space and races for the tryline. TRY !

25.00: Pietersen adds the conversion and the scores are level. 

30.00: The scrum has to be reset a couple of times but when it completes the Cheetahs kick to the corner and set up a line out about 10m out. 

34.00: A fight breaks out and everyone runs in to join in. It dies down and the TMO is called in. Franco Mostert is given a warning and the Cheetahs a penalty. They kick for touch. 

36.00: The Cheetahs win the line out and build up their attack in the Lions 22. 

38.00: The Cheetahs go through about 13 phases and as they can’t get through Joe Pietersen takes a drop goal and nails it. The Cheetahs lead. 

40.00: As the siren sounds Pietersen goes for another drop goal but this one he misses.

41.00: The Lions get the perfect start as Lionel Mapoe slips a pass out to Ruan Combrinck in the tackle and he races away to score. TRY 

42.00: Jantjies addes the conversion. 

The Lions do it again. Mapoe inside steps and gets into space and races for the line and scores. TRY! 

44.00: Jantjies adds the conversion again. 

47.00: The Lions are looking for the bonus point now. Jantjies gets the ball at paces and passes to Arman van der Merwe who runs for the line but is stopped short. The Lions do however win a penalty.

48.00: Jantjies slots the penalty kick to extend the lead. 

49.00: The Cheetahs come close to scoring but the Lions just manage to hold them out. Francois Venter was close. 

54.00: The Lions press the Cheetahs back into their 22. They set up a 5m scrum – Cheetahs put in. Penalty however to the Cheetahs. 

59.00: The Cheetahs work the ball from their end to the Lions tryline. They spread the Lions defence and Francois Venter goes over to score. TRY! 

59.00: Joe Pietersen slots the conversion. 

61.00: Joe Pietersen starts the Cheetahs counter-attack by fending off several tackles and he sends in Johan Sadie who runs in the Cheetahs third TRY! 

62.00: Pietersen adds the conversion and the scores are level. 

64.00: The Lions go through 9 pheases on the attack but they are pushed into touch. 

66.00: The Cheetahs set up an attacking line out. They win the line out and then a penalty. They choose to kick for touch and the line out again. 

67.00:The Cheetahs knock on after the line out. Lions scrum. 

68.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum. Jantjies kicks for touch. 

70.00: The Lions win a kickable penalty. Jantjies takes the kick and nails it putting the Lions into the lead. 

71.00: The Lions get the ball and slip through a gap and Lionel Mapoe manages to get the ball away in the tackle but Corne Fourie loses the ball as he goes over. 

73.0: Marnitz Boshoff who has just come on passes the ball to Ruan Combrinck and he almost gets to the line but he passes to Faf de Klerk who goes over to score the bonus point TRY! 

76.00: The Cheetahs break out from inside their half. They move the ball through the hands and they stretch the Lions and Carel Greef scores in the corner. TRY! The TMO checks the try and it is awarded. 

77.00: Pietersen misses the conversion from out wide. 

79.00: The Lions have the ball and they are winding the clock down. 

79.59; Penalty to the Cheetahs. They tap and go. 

80.18 The siren sounds. 

81.00: The Cheetahs move the ball through the hands. They get into the Lions 22 but lose the ball – the Lions kick it out.
