Surgery rules Matfield out for up to three weeks

Bulls and Springbok line out specialist Victor Matfield will miss the next three weeks of Super Rugby as he needs surgery on his knee.

Bulls lock Matfield saw Dr Daan Du Plessis on Tuesday and confirmed the injury needed surgery which he will have done on Wednesday.

The renowned knee specialist Dr.Du Plessis expects that Matfield will be able to return to playing again in around three weeks.

Reports surfaced early last week of Matfield’s knee injury but the Bulls played down the injuiry and suggested that the lock was being rested for the match against the Lions.

Thirty-seven-year-old Matfield is crucial to the Bulls Super Rugby title hopes as well as the Springboks world cup campaign which is why the Bulls have chosen to have his knee repaired now before it gets any worse.

On Monday the Bulls revealed that Flip van der Merwe has returned to training this week which will soften the blow of losing Matfield a little but Grant Hattingh is now expected to plenty of game time.
