Hurricanes beat Lions in Johannesburg

Japan and the Southern Kings in Super Rugby next year seems unlikely

Super Rugby in South Africa kicks off in Johannesburg when the Lions host the Hurricanes – a team they have not played since 2012.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Lions kick off and we are underway. 

2.00: The Hurricanes take the ball straight out so the Lions have a line out. They win the line out and start their attack in the Hurricanes half. 

3.00: Faf de Klerk is tackled a little high so the Lions have a penalty. They kick for touch. 

4.00: The Lions win the line out and then a penalty for playing the player in the air. Marnitz Boshoff will kick for posts. 

5.00: Boshoff misses the penalty and Beauden Barrett sends the ball back with interest. The Lions win the line out and set up a maul. They move the ball out and run at the Hurricanes. 

7.00: Another penalty to the Lions. Boshoff misses again. 0/2. 

9.00: The Lions knock on as they try to drive over the line so the Hurricanes have a 5m scrum. The scrum has to be reset. The Lions win a penalty as Ben Franks went to ground. Boshoff kicks for touch. 

11.00: The Lions win the line out and use the maul. It wheels and the Lions get another penalty. Boshoff kicks for touch again. 

14.00: The Lions win the line out but the Hurricanes turn the ball over and run it out of their 22. 

15.00: The Hurricanes win a line out but as they attack Ardie Savea loses the ball and knocks on. Lions scrum. 

16.00:The Lions have an advantage so Boshoff goes for a drop goal. They are then called back for another penalty to the Lions. Boshoff hits the post. 0/3. 

18.00: Marnitz Boshoff has taken a knock so he goes off for a concussion test. Elton Jantjies comes on. 

19.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty so Beauden Barrett lines up the posts for a kick. 

20.00: Barrett slots the penalty and the Hurricanes are on the board. 

22.00: The Lions up the pace on the attack and and they stretch the Hurricanes and Ruan Combrinck goes over for the first TRY! 

24.00: Elton Jantjies takes the conversion kick but misses. Lions lead. 

26.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty from the scrum so Barrett will take another shot at the posts. 

29.00: Barrett nails the penalty putting the Hurricanes back in front. Boshoff comes back on. 

31.00: The Lions go through 13 phases on attack in the Hurricanes 22 but the visitors keep them out and the Lions lose the ball forward. 

35.00: The Hurricanes attack down the wing and TJ Perenara powers through a gap and a pass from Jason Woodward and races for the line and scores. The TMO reviews the try and it is awarded. TRY! 

36.00: Barrett misses the conversion. 2/3. 

39.00; The Lions win another penalty from a scrum and they signal that they will go for posts. 

40.00: Boshoff slots the penalty and its half time. 1/4

The half time score was Lions 8 Hurricanes 11

The Hurricanes kick off and we are underway for the second half. 

43.00: The Hurricanes win a line out on the Lions throw and they attack the Lions just outside the Lions 22. The Lions defend. 

46.00: Boshoff comes off and Jantjies comes on for the Lions. 

48.00: The Lions attack appears to be stronger with Jantjies on the field. They work the ball up to the Canes 22 but then knock on. 

49.00: Perenara clears the ball and Skosana goes high as does Cory Jane who concedes a penalty for tackling in the air. Jantjies’ kick is awful and goes out on the full. 

51.00:Penalty to the Hurricanes. Perenara takes the quick tap and makes some ground but then he passes to Savea who is brought to ground. The Hurricanes win the scrum and attack. The Lions then win a penalty for playing on the ground. They will kick for posts. 

53.00: Barrett slots the penalty to extend the lead. 3/4. 

56.00: Victor Vito comes on for Brad Shields. The Lions win their line out and try the maul. It disintegrates but the Lions win a penalty for collapsing the maul. Jantjies will kick for touch.  

59.00: The Lions try to attack after the line out but they lose the ball. The Hurricanes kick deep and in the counter attack the Lions win another penalty. That could be the 13th penalty to the Lions. The Lions lose control of the ball and Savea gets it – he toes it upfield but is brought to ground and the Lions get back to defend. 

62.00: The Lions get spoken to about leaving a gap at the scrum. 

64.00: The Hurricanes are playing a clever game as they keep pinning the Lions back forcing them to attack from deep. Barrett kicks the ball and it travels well downfield and out. 

65.00: The Lions win a line out and use the maul. The Hurricanes turn the ball over and attack from the half way line. 

69.00: The Lions appear to have woken up and have increased their pace in attack. The Hurricanes however are sapping it all up. 

73.00: Derrick Minnie concedes a penalty for offside so the Hurricanes get a penalty. It’s kickable. 

74.00: Barrett takes the kick and nails it. 4/5. 

75.00: The Hurricanes almost get an intercept but the ball gets knocked down by Stokkies Hanekom. 

76.00: The Hurricanes have a scrum in the Lions 22. 

77.00: The Hurricanes quickly go through 7 phases on attack in the Lions 22 but they are held out. The Lions knock on giving the Canes a 5m scrum. 

79.00; The Hurricanes have several stabs at the line but the Lions turn it over and knock the ball to the Hurricanes who pounce on the ball over the line. We go back for a scrum as there were kniock ons everywhere there. 

80.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum on the Lions put in and they send the ball wide for Matt Proctor who scores in the corner. TRY! As the siren sounds. 

Barrett misses the conversion from out wide. 

That is it. The Hurricanes win.
