Leicester Tigers earned a 17-8 Anglo Welsh LV=Cup victory over East Midlands rivals Northampton Saints at Welford Road on Saturday.
Northampton’s LV Cup hopes now rest on Round 4 results after they slipped to a first loss in the 2014/15 competition.
East Midlands derbies are never drab affairs and Leicester claimed the latest bragging rights with their victory at Welford Road.
Sebastian de Chaves wasted no time, grabbing the first try after five minutes after typically powerful work from the home pack.
Poor conditions didn’t favour the kickers but Will Hooley did land an effort to put Northampton on the board after 20 minutes.
Laurence Pearce then crashed over from close-range after an excellent break from Jack Roberts, putting Leicester 14-3 to the good by half-time.
Hope for Saints came in the form of Howard Packman’s try in the second half, latching on to Sam Olver’s grubber kick, as Leicester continued to reject kicks at goal.
Williams’ eventual strike restored some calm, enough for Leicester to take an unimpressive win save for the performance of Roberts.
