Chiefs start Super Rugby trials with Blues victory

The Chiefs have started their Super Rugby pre-season with a 20-41 victory over the Blues in Whangarei on Thursday evening.

The Chiefs outscored the Blues by six tries two in the pre-season game at Toll Stadium.

The Chiefs looked to be the more organised of the two sides as the match wore on after they led 6-24 at half time.

Blues N0.10 Ihaia West kicked two penalties to put the Blues into a 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter but then tries from Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna, halfback Brad Weber and wing James Lowe put the Chiefs into the lead before half time.

In the second half both teams made bug changes to their teams which caused the game to lose shape.

Blues replacement first five-eighth Simon Hickey and Chiefs loose forward Tevita Koloamatangi added tries but in reality after the Chiefs 19 point burst the result wasn’t really ever in doubt.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie was satisfied with their first trial of the year. “Considering it was our first hit-out we were pretty happy. We played a real positive brand of footy with good continuity,” said Rennie on the Chiefs site.

The Chiefs and Blues kick off their Super Rugby season against each other at the North Harbour Stadium on Saturday 14 February.

The two teams also play each other at Waikato Stadium on Saturday 4 April.
