Pietersen set to play SuperRugby at 10 for Cheetahs

Former Stormers fullback Joe Pietersen has joined the Cheetahs for the Super Rugby season from French club Biarritz and is expected to play the No 10 jersey.

Pietersen returned to South Africa late last year and has replaced Johan Goosen who left to play in France for Racing Metro.

The former Stormers back can play fullback, wing and flyhalf but reports suggest that he was brought back to South Africa with the aim of playing him at flyhalf.

If Pietersen has been brought in to play at flyhalf he will go up against Francois Brummer, Willie du Plessis and Elgar Watts in a selection battle.

Watts was Goosen’s understudy in 2013 but has been struggling with a knee injury recently and is expected to miss the start of the Super Rugby season.

Cheetahs backline coach Hawies Fourie has revealed that Pietersen has been training at flyhalf in their pre-season with Willie le Roux, Coenie van Wyk and Clayton Blommetjies being considered for the fullback role.

“He (Pietersen) is good on attack and also has a lot of vision. He’s also an experienced player that knows how to handle pressure and can put guys in gaps. I believe he has enough skills to make it (his move to flyhalf) work,” Fourie told Netwerk24.

The Cheetahs will play Super Rugby warm up matches against the Bulls, Stormers and Griffons in which Pietersen, Brummer and Du Plessis will be given a chance to impress the selectors.

The Cheetahs will kick off their Super Rugby season in Durban against the Sharks on February the 14th.
