Griquas relieved after beating Kings in Currie Cup

Griquas coach Hawies Fourie says that he is a happy man after his team beat Eastern Province Kings 45-25 in their Currie Cup match at GWK Park in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

The result keeps the Griquas second from the bottom on the overall points table and the Kimberley based side now hope that the Kings can beat the Pumas so that they can keep their spot in the Premier Division of the competition.

Currently on 16 points, Griquas face a tough outing against the Blue Bulls next weekend in Pretoria, but if they manage to beat the Pretoria based side and the Kings beat the Pumas, who are currently on 19 points, chances are good that they will finish the round robin stage in the top six.

“We are very happy with the result. We knew it was going to be difficult against the Kings as they still have to prove a point, but in the end we did well,” Fourie said.

“We also rounded off our attacks, something that has been a problem at times this year.”

Griquas led the first half 14-13 at the break and the coach admitted there were some harsh words at half-time for his side.

“We did not play well at all in the first 40 minutes. We kept on throwing the ball away and kept on letting them back into the game.

“We had a honest chat among ourselves at half-time and the guys came out all guns blazing.

“Next we travel to Pretoria for what is going to be a tough game against the Bulls. We need to finish strong and hopefully we can do so.”

For the Kings, their performance echoed the poor season they’ve had thus far.

Not winning a single game and with only a single point on the log standings, Kings coach Carlos Spencer had little words to describe yet another dismal performance by his charges.

“It is just very disappointing. That is all that is left to say,” Spencer said.
