NZRU expedite Sonny Bill Williams AB return

The New Zealand Rugby Union have relaxed their rules for Sonny Bill Williams by granting him an exemption from the ITM Cup and allowing him to play for the All Blacks later this year.

Williams left Rugby Union to take up an offer in Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) but will return to Rugby next year and play Super Rugby for his former team the Chiefs.

His return has however now been brought forward as selection for the All Blacks would normally only take place once a player has played domestic rugby in NZ.

The NZRU say that they have made an exemption which allows Sonny Bill Williams to play the world champions’ end-of-year tour to the United States and Europe giving him more time to prepare for the Rugby world cup next year in England.

“SonnyBWilliams gets exemption to be selected for end of year tour even if he doesn’t play ITM Cup,” the All Blacks said on their Twitter feed.

Williams was a Rugby World Cup winner in 2011 and in 2012 he won a Super Rugby title with the Chiefs in 2012.
