White prefers the old Super Rugby format

Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White says that he prefers the old Super Rugby format in which every team plays all of the other teams.

In 2011 Super Rugby adopted a conference format where teams within conferences play each other twice – at home and away.

Super Rugby teams also play four out of five teams from the other conferences and in 2016 teams will also be put into groups as well as their conferences.

In 2016 three teams will be added increasing the number of Super Rugby teams from 15 to 18. South Africa will get a sixth team, Argentina will get a team and either Singapore or Japan will get a team.

“I think that less is more, I think that you should play everybody in a competition to see how good you are,” the Springbok World Cup-winning coach told Radio Sport.

“You want to play Kiwi and Aussie sides when you’re South African,” said White.

“We should have gone back to the old format, where you play everybody and the winner becomes the winner.”
