Chiefs beat Hurricanes in Hamilton

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Chiefs and the Hurricanes the current champion Chiefs have won three and lost two.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Hurricanes kick off and we are underway.

2.00: Some early mistakes from both teams, knocks ons and messy line outs with neith team taking control.

4.00: The Chiefs win a line out just outside the Hurricanes 22. They set up a maul and drive for the line.

5.00: The Chiefs get the ball to the 5m line but when they go wide Brodie Retalick’s pass is poor and the Chiefs are slowed and then they knock on.

7.00: Penalty to the Chiefs from the ruck. Aaron Cruden takes the kick from about 35m out on the angle. He misses.

10.00: The Hurricanes chip the ball ahead and Liam Messam has to chase and get the ball back to save a try. The Hurricanes get a 5m scrum.

12.00:The Hurricanes go through 10 phases but they can’t get through. The Chiefs win a penalty and take the quick tap.

13.00: The Chiefs make some ground and then kick upfield. The Hurricanes take the ball into touch which gives the Chiefs a line out in the Hurricanes half.

14.00; The Chiefs win the line out but they lose the ball and knock on.

16.00: No shortage of tension in this match. Both teams feeling the pressure.

17.00: The Hurricanes have a line out and Perenara kicks it straight out.

18.00: The Chiefs win the line out and again use the maul. They try to go wide but the Hurricanes defend and hold them out.

20.00: Penalty to the Chiefs. Cruden lines up the kick and this one he nails from in front.

22.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty back so Beauden Barrett takes a shot from almost 50m. He just sneaks it over the bar to level the scores.

24.00: Tom Marshall has a run for the Chiefs and looks dangerous but the Hurricanes defend. The ball goes out.

26.00: The Chiefs win a line out on the Hurricanes 5m line. They use the maul but the ball goes to ground and we have a 5m scrum.  

28.00: The Chiefs win the scrum and drive over the line. Jamie Mackintosh gets driven over by a splinter group of forwards and scores. TRY!

28.00: Cruden adds the conversion and the Chiefs lead by 7.

32.00: The Chiefs win a  scrum inside their half. They kick the ball upfield and a kicking contest follows with both teams failing to find touch. The Chiefs players get caught offside (Cruden) so the Hurricanes win a penalty.

34.00: Barrett slots the penalty to cut the deficit a little.

36.00: Penalty to the Chiefs. Cruden takes the shot and nails it.

38.00: The Chiefs are starting to take control of the match. They put the Hurricanes under pressure in their 22. The Chiefs get an advantage but they play on. The Hurricanes almost get an intercept but we go back for the penalty.

39.00: Cruden lines up the penalty kick in front of the posts. He nails it and the siren sounds.

It’s half time.

The half time score was Chiefs 16 Hurricanes 6

The Chiefs kick off and the second half is underway.

42.00: The Chiefs have started the second half with real intensity. They get the ball to the Hurricanes 5m line but then the Canes get the ball and boot it upfield. The Chiefs get back for the ball but the Hurricanes turn the ball over and Ardie Savea slips a pass out to Julian Savea who is open but he misses the ball and it goes out.

45.00: Penalty to the Hurricanes. Beauden Barrett takes the kick and nails it. The penalty was for a high tackle on Coles by Mackintosh.

46.00:The Hurricanes kick high for Julian Savea who goes for the ball and loses it as he catches it which gives the Chiefs a scrum inside the Hurricanes half.

50.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty but Barrett clips it wrongly and the kick is bad so he miss
