Hurricanes waiting on Vito and Leiua for Chiefs

The Hurricanes are waiting on scans and x-ray results to determine whether players Victor Vito and Alapati Leiua will be available to play in Super Rugby match against the Chiefs in Hamilton.

The Hurricanes have a bye in the final round so this weekend will be their final regular season match and they will need as many players available for the must win match.

Hurricanes defence coach Clark Laidlaw expects that neither No 8 Vito (calf) or second five-eighth Leiua (ankle) will be available to play against the Chiefs.

The Hurricanes will however wait until they have the full medical reports before making a final call and this is most likely to happen on Tuesday morning.

“Obviously Alapati and Victor were the two most serious of the bumps and bruises we picked up and they’re being assessed today,” Laidlaw told Stuff.

“They’re having scans this morning, so we’re waiting on those two injuries … Obviously, when you come off in the first seven minutes it is less likely you will recover for a game six days later, but we’ll have to wait and see.

“It’s not even 48 hours since we played, so come tomorrow the medics will be able to have a real good look and see where they’re at.”

The Hurricanes did however get some good news as hooker Dane Coles who struggled through the second half against the Crusaders.

“The rest of the guys have pulled up pretty well … we’re confident most of the guys will pull through and be ready for Friday,” Laidlaw said.

“He (Coles) got a whack on the calf. He’s had a bit of a history with calf injuries, but all signs are it was more of a knock than a tear.

“He’s a lot more comfortable today. He’s packed in a bit of exercise (this morning) and we’re pretty confident he’ll be right.”
