Highlanders beat Sharks in Durban

Out of the last five matches between the Sharks and the Highlanders the Sharks have won four and the Highlanders have won one.

We are waiting for the kick off. The teams are on the pitch.

0.01: The Highlanders kick off and we are underway.

1.00: Penalty to the Highlanders inside the Sharks half from a scrum.

2.00:Lima Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. The Highlanders lead.

4.00: The Sharks work the ball to the Highlanders 5m line. The Highlanders defend and force the knock on.

5.00: The Highlanders win the scrum and clear the ball.

6.00: The Sharks start their attack after the line out, they get into the Highlanders 22 and get stopped initially. The ball pops out of ruck and is grabbed by Charl MacLeod and he passes to Lwazi Mvovo who goes over to score the first TRY! The TMO checks. Oh but wait, Paul Jordaan obstructed a Highlanders player and the try is disallowed. We go back for a penalty.

7.00: Tim Swiel takes the penalty and levels the scores.

9.00: The Sharks win a penalty inside the Highlanders half but outside their 22. Tim Swiel lines up the kick but misses. Probably rushed a little.

12.00: It’s all attack from the Sharks so far. The Highlanders can only defend. The pressure wins a penalty for the Sharks. Swiel lines up again.

13.00: Swiel takes the kick as Jannie du Plessis gets some help from the medics. He comes off for a concussion test. Swiel slots the kick.

14.00: The Highlanders win a penalty in their half for offside. They kick for touch.

16.00: The Highlanders get their first attacking opportunity. They get through the Sharks and then chip through. Richard Buckman chases and scores the first TRY!

18.00: Sopoaga’s conversion goes in off the left hand post.

20.00: The Sharks get the ball into the Highlanders half – just – and then Frans Steyn gets the ball and goes for a drop goal but misses. They had the advantage so we go back for a penalty.

21.00: Swiel takes the penalty kick and nails it.

24.00: Highlanders winger Patrick Osborne sustains an injury to his right ankle in a tackle and has to come off. He will be replaced by Trent Renata.

26.00: The Sharks kick for touch and Sopoaga catches it with a foot in touch so the Highlanders get the line out put in. They win the line out and attack the Sharks in the corner. They get close but the Sharks knock on.

27.00: The Highlanders win the scrum and as they get to the posts, Aaron Smith slips through and scores. TRY!

27.00: Sopoaga slots the conversion.

28.00: Shane Christie of the Highlanders concedes a penalty for going off his feet. Swiel will kick for posts.

29.00: Swiel takes the kick but misses.

31.00: Ben Smith takes a knock in a tackle but is given time to be helped by the medics as the Highlanders have a penalty. They kick for touch and set up a line out just 7m out.

32.00: The Highlanders win the line out and set up the maul. They drive over the line and Shane Christie scores. TRY! Strange to see a NZ team beating a South African team at their own game – the maul.

33.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick and slots it.

35.00: The Sharks work the ball into the Highlanders half. The ball handling is scrappy and the ref gets in the way. We go back for a scrum in front of the posts 18m out in front of the Highlanders posts.

37.00: The Sharks win the scrum but lose the ball forward, the Highlanders act quickly and boot the ball upfield.

38.00: The Sharks – Mvovo – snipe down the wing but he then concedes a penalty for not releasing. Sopoaga kicks for touch. Shane Christie comes off and John Hardie comes on – could be for blood.

40.00: The Highlanders have a scrum as the siren sounds. The Sharks however win a penalty. They get another 10 for throwing the ball away. Swiel will kick for posts.
