Sharks beat Lions in Johannesburg

Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Lions and the Sharks the Johannesburg Lions have drawn one, won one and lost three matches.

We are waiting for the kick off. Paul Jordaan’s return has been delayed by a week and he has withdrawn and been replaced by Williams.

0.01: Marnitz Boshoff kicks off and we are underway. Odwa Ndungane almost gets a dream start as he gets the ball and races through the Lions defence after a dummy pass. A hectic minute of action follows and ends with a line out for the Lions.

2.00: The Sharks win a line out and Charl MacLeod gets the ball and attacks but then on McLeod’s second pass the ball goes into touch.   

4.00: Penalty to the Sharks in front. Fred Zeilinga takes the kick and nails it.

5.00: Deon van Rensburg  goes up for a high ball and is taken out by Lwazi Mvovo. The game is held up as he will be driven off in the medical buggy. Alwyn Hollenbach will comes on. The Sharks win a penalty from the incident. Zeilinga slots the penalty.

6.00: Boshoff goes for a drop goal but he misses. To the right.

9.00: The Lions are holding off the Sharks attacks for now. They win a penalty so Boshoff kicks for touch. Penalty was from the scrum.

11.00: Penalty to the Sharks for not releasing the ball. The Sharks kick for touch and the line out.

12.00: Kankowski is played in the air at the line out so the Sharks have another penalty. Zeilinga will kick for posts. He takes the kick and misses this one.

16.00: The Lions scrum powers through the Sharks scrum and earns them a penalty. Faf de Klerk takes a quick tap but then the Lions can’t do anything with the ball and they concede a penalty.

17.00: The Sharks kick upfield but can’t find touch. The Lions kick it back and they can’t find touch. The game is paused as Zeilinga is injured. It looks like Zeilinga has pulled a hamstring.  The TMO is also called in to look at something Jannie du Plessis did. He went in with the shoulder and late so he is shown a yellow card. Penalty Lions. Zeilinga is off. Heimar Williams is on.

18.00: Boshoff takes the kick and nails it. The Lions are on the board.

22.00: Due to the yellow card Lourens Adriaanse comes on and Jean Deysel comes off for a Lions scrum. The Sharks win a free kick from the scrum and they kick upfield.

24.00: The Sharks work the ball into the Lions 25. They go through the phases but the Lions – with the extra man – hold them out. The Lions do however concede a penalty. The Sharks kick for touch and the line out 5m out.

26.00: The Lions win the line out on the Sharks throw and Courtnall Skosan kicks for touch but doesn’t find it. The Sharks boot the ball out.

27.00: Du Plessis comes back on and Deysel and Adriaanse change places.

30.00: Bismarck du Plessis is starting to talk a lot to Craig Joubert about things he feels Joubert should be doing and seeing. The Sharks try to attack the Lions but the home side turn the ball over and run it into the Sharks half. JP Pietersen almost gets an intercept but we are called back as a Sharks player was offside for a penalty.

32.00: Boshoff takes the penalty kick and nails it. The scores are level.

35.00: The Sharks attack in the Lions 22. They get to the 5m line but the Lions push them back and then they win a penalty for not releasing the ball. Boshoff clears.

38.00: Penalty in their half to the Sharks. Steyn kicks for touch.

39.00: The Sharks win a line out in the Lions half. They attack and the Lions lose the ball backwards, Willem Alberts pounces on the ball and scores. We go to the TMO to check. No try as Alberts held de Klerk back. Bismarck du Plessis is not happy.

40.00: The Lions get a penalty and Boshoff kicks for touch. Its half time.
