Cheetahs lose their vice-captain for Blues clash

Francois Venter will captain the Cheetahs in 2016

The Cheetahs have suffered a blow for the rest of their tour of Australia and New Zealand as vice-captain and centre Francois Venter has been ruled out with a shoulder injury.

Twenty-two-year-old Venter is the second Cheetahs player to be ruled out and sent home from this tour as prop Coenie Oosthuizen also withdrew due to a neck injury.

Venter had a scan on Monday following the Cheetahs 60-27 defeat to the Hurricanes on the weekend which has confirmed a neck injury.

“It’s bad to lose Francois. He is our vice-captain and it’s huge setback,” coach Naka Drotske told Volksblad.

Drotske has called up Griquas flyhalf Francois Brummer as cover for Venter ahead of the Cheetahs Super Rugby match against the Blues in Auckland on Saturday.

The Cheetahs were given some good news as wing Raymond Rhule was in doubt for this weekend but has recovered from an ankle niggle and will be fit to face the Blues.
