Sharks beat Lions in Durban

The winner of the match between the Sharks and the Lions will almost certainly top the South African Super Rugby conference at the end of this contest.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off. The Sharks released a team sheet 30 minutes before the match without Patrick Lambie’s name on it and with Frans Steyn starting at 10. Lambie was not feeling well.

0.01:Frans Steyn kicks off and we are underway.  

1.00: The Sharks make a strong start to the match. Ndungane puts a foot into touch as the Sharks attack in the Lions 22.

2.00: Both teams showing intent to run the ball early on.

4.00: The Lion come under some pressure and Faf de Klerk kicks the ball ahead and gets flattened after the kick.

6.00: Neither team has started to dominate the match just yet and they are both testing each other out.

7.00; The Lions lose the ball in contact, Kankowski sends long pass out and the Sharks kick ahead, Jordaan gets to the ball and scores TRY!  

8.00:Frans Steyn slots the conversion.

11.00: Penalty to the Lions. Marnitz Boshoff takes the shot and nails it.

13.00: There is a break in play for Willie Wepener who gets some help from the medics.

15.00: Penalty to the Lions. Boshoff takes the shot and nails it.

19.00: Penalty to the Sharks. Steyn will take the penalty kick for posts.

20.00: Steyn takes the shot and slots it.

22.00: The Lions form a maul but the ball comes out and then a ruck forms where the Lions concede another penalty. They get marched back another 10 so the Sharks will have another shot at the posts.

23.00: Steyn takes the kick and slots it.

25.00: The Sharks win a line out on the Lions 22. They bash their way towards the line. The Lions try to hold them out but they steadily edge forward.

27.00: Penalty to the Lions in their 22. They will kick for touch.

29.00: The Sharks kick the ball well downfield but Boshoff gets back and the Lions will have a 22 dropout.

32.00: The Assistant referee comes in to report that there was an infringement. We go to the TMO. A penalty is awarded to the Sharks for a late tackle. The Sharks will kick for posts from inside their half.

33.00: Steyn takes the kick from well out and nails it from 10 inside their half.

35.00: Penalty to the Lions. Boshoff will kick from just outside the Sharks 22. He nails it.

37.00: Cobus Reinach bolts away from the back of a lineout and races for the line dodging three Lions players and scores. TRY. Excellent individual try.

38.00: Steyn bangs over the conversion.

40.00: The siren goes for half time. It is half time.

The half time score was Sharks 23 Lions 9

The Lions kick off and the second half is underway.

41.00: The first penalty of the second half goes to the Sharks. Steyn kicks for touch.

42.00: There is a break in play as a Lions player is down injured. The Lions have a defensive scrum in their 22.

43.00: The Lions win the scrum and De Klerk makes a break which gets the Lions out of their 22 and up to the half way line.

44.00: The Lions set up a Sharks line out in the Sharks 22.

45.00: The Sharks lose the line out. The Lions get pressed back and then there is a high tackle from Willem Alberts so the Lions have a penalty. Lions kick for touch.

47.00: Kankowski snatches the Lions line out ball and the Sharks kick for touch.

49.00: Elton Jantjies tries to chip the ball upfield and chase it but Willem Alberts reads the move and flicks it to Marcell Coetzee who passes to Odwa Ndungane who runs in the Sharks third try.

50.00: Frans Steyn slots the conversion.
