Chiefs beat Highlanders in Hamilton

Double Super Rugby champions the Chiefs have won four out of the last five Super Rugby matches between them and the Highlanders including the last three straight victories.

0.01: The Highlanders kick off and we are underway.

1.00: Early penalty to the Highlanders inside the Chiefs half for not releasing. Lima Sopoaga will kick for posts.

2.00: Sopoaga takes the kick and nails it. HIghlanders lead.

4.00: The Chiefs work the ball up into the Highlanders half but it goes out after a dab kick.

5.00: The Chiefs take a quick line out and then the Highlanders win a penalty. They kick for touch.

6.00: Highlanders showing an intent to run at the Chiefs but their handling lets them down. Knock on.

7.00: Penalty to the Chiefs as the Highlanders scrum collapses but it’s for illegal binding. They kick for touch.

8.00: Highlanders win the line out and then use the box kick, it comes back to the Highlanders and they run at the Chiefs. As they get to the other side players leave their feet and it’s another penalty to the Chiefs who kick for touch.

9.00: Wow. The Chiefs win the line out and spread the ball down the line and then Tim Nanai-Williams gets the ball on the wing and races away to score the first TRY!

11.00: Aaron Cruden takes the conversion kick and curls it in. At first it looked to be well off but it curled in.

14.00: The Highlanders get the ball into the Chiefs half and have a scrum. It has to be reset a couple of times.

18.00; The scrum finally completes and the Highlanders run the ball. They get to the Chiefs 22m line. They keep the ball alive going through 8 phases and then they win a penalty. They will kick for posts.

19.00:Lima Sopoaga takes the shot and nails it.

20.00: Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna has a run down the wing but he is eventually pushed into touch. The Highlanders win the line out and then kick the ball into touch.

21.00: The Chiefs take the quick line out and run the ball back at the Highlanders.

22.00: The Chiefs struggle to get through so they try the grubber but the Highlanders get back to cover it. They also have to take the ball out so the Chiefs have a line out. The Chiefs win the line out but they give away a penalty so the Highlanders clear.

24.00: After the line out the Highlanders win another penalty so they kick for touch. The Highlanders win the lineout but kick the ball away.

25.00: The Chiefs have a little run but then the Highlanders give a penalty away for joining the ruck illegally. Cruden will kick.

26.00: Cruden kicks for posts and misses.

29.00: The Highlanders attack with the ball in the Chiefs 22. They go through 8 phases, 9, 10, wave after wave. 15 phases and still they attack. The Highlanders then drop the ball and Asaeli Tikoirotuma races down the line but is caught.

31.00:The Highlanders possession is at 64%. They win a line out and drive over the line using the maul. It’s a TRY to John Hardie!

32.00: Sopoaga takes the conversion kick and slots it.

35.00: The Highlanders continue to dominate the match. They work the ball into the Chiefs half but then they knock on. There is a pause for an injury. Chiefs possession is 37%.

36.00: The Chiefs win a scrum and boot upfield. The Highlanders kick it back and chase but there is an obstruction so the Higlanders have a penalty.

37.00: Sopoaga will kick for posts. He nails it.

38.00: After the restart the Chiefs win a penalty so they will kick for posts.

39.00: Cruden takes the kick but misses to the right. After the restart Kerr-Barlow slips through a gap and makes huge ground but he is caught.

40.00: The siren sounds for half time. It is half time.
