SANZAR : Sharks try should not have been given

Super Rugby’s organizers have admitted that the Sharks should not have been awarded one of their tries against the Bulls.

Sanzar referees boss Lyndon Bray says that Television Match Official Deon van Blommenstein was wrong to award Cobus Reinach his try in the Sharks 31-16 win over the Bulls on Saturday.

The Sharks scored their fourth try in extra time and from this they earned a bonus point from the match and they now lead the Super Rugby standings.

TMO Van Blommenstein awarded the try to the Sharks after seeing several replays but appeared to ignore that the ball was knocked forward by Sharks lock Anton Bresler in the line out.

As the knock forward was the first incident it should have been the decision and then if not then a penalty should have been awarded to the Bulls as the incident happened in the air.

Put simply the try should not have been awarded as there was an illegal incident in the run up to the try.

The Sharks will be allowed to keep the bonus point which could be crucial if the final standings come down to that bonus point at the end of the season.

“We unfortunately got the TMO decision wrong. The Sharks forward did knock the ball forward out of the Bulls player’s hands, ” Bray told SuperSport.

“Also, there was consideration to the fact that the Sharks player obstructed the Bulls player in the air,” said Bray

“Deon has accepted that the right decision should have been a knock-on and scrum to the Bulls,” added the SANZAR referees boss.

While the Sharks can be considered lucky with to be allowed to keep the bonus point there is no doubt that the mistake influenced the outcome of the match as the Sharks were clearly the better team on the day.
