Ackermann confident in Lions Super Rugby depth

Coach Johan Ackermann is confident that his 2014 Lions Super Rugby squad has enough depth to cope with their long injury list just weeks before the start of the Super Rugby season.

Although the Lions are still in their pre-season Elton Jantjies, Anthony Volmink, Ruan Dreyer, Ruan Combrinck, Deon Van Rensburg and Lionel Mapoe are all currently injured.

The Lions – who replaced the Southern Kings for this year – play their first match in just over a month on the 15th of February against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Ackermann says that despite the number of high profile injuries the Lions squad is in good shape for the Super Rugby season.

“It looks like most of the players came back in good nick after the break. It’s now up to us to see who the best 35 players are, ” Ackermann told Eyewitness News.

“We’ve still got four or five Pumas players and two Leopards players with us, and hopefully we’ll get some of our injured players back before the first game.”

Ackermann says the majority of the injured players should be available for opening Super Rugby round.

“Elton Jantjies and Anthony Volmink are two of our main players. By the second or third round I think all of our players will be fully fit and available for selection.”

“Ruan Combrinck, Lionel Mapoe, Deon van Rensburg and Dylan Des Fountain will all probably be fit in the next three to four weeks,” added the Lions coach.
