Back to back Super Rugby Champions the Chiefs have suffered an injury blow already and have had to look beyond their extended Super Rugby squad to cover for injuries during the pre-season.
Former Crusaders back Tom Marshall joined the Chiefs in the off season but has had to have surgery on his thumb and will miss the start of the 2014 season.
Double Super Rugby winning coach Dave Rennie says that they will look to fill the gap with some of their ITM Cup players.
“We’ve got Ihaia West who’s been running with us a couple of weeks before Christmas and then now Marty McKenzie will come in as cover next week,” Rennie told NewstalkZB
Rennie said that they are hoping to have more information in the next couple of weeks on the immediate future of Robbie Fruean who is recovering from heart surgery.
